Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His life was untarnished, and unsophisticated. His main role was essentially to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the wind through the lone tree on the hilltop were his main here companions. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome scheme.
Stories of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but found no beast.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
